Finding the right drawing software is an important step in creating your own patterns for stained glass and mosaic work. There are a multitude of products on the market and the problem that we have found is that most do so much more than what you need that they become cumbersome and complicated. A 2 dimensional drawing program with some line curving capabilities is really what you need. There are two programs for drawing that are very popular and also free. One called Inkscape is a vector based drawing program. Vector based software allows you to easily scale up or down your pattern without losing any clarity. It creates patterns using lines and curves based on mathematical formulas which is why the finished patterns are fully scalable. Inkscape can be found at the this link. Inkscape.org
The other free program that we would recommend is called gimp. It draws using a bitmap formula which simply means that it uses dots. This is the same method that photographs use. Drawing in a bitmap format is not so different from vector drawing. The patterns are still scalable but may lose some resolution if enlarged too much. The gimp program can be downloaded from Gimp.org.
There is one more program that we can recommend for drawing. However, it is more for 3d renderings. It is called sketchup. It is a free program owned by google. It can be downloaded at sketchup.google.com
I hope these programs are helpful to you.
