Working with stained glass can be a challenging, fun, hobby and in some cases a profitable business. You can make stained glass pieces for yourself or as Christmas presents for your family and friends. You can even create pieces and sell them at craft fairs or over the internet via ebay or an online store. Many stained glass artisans make a good living creating stained glass panels for commericial buildings, churches and other public facilities. After learning to make stained glass pieces you can venture into other similar areas such as mosaics, glass etching, and stained glass stepping stones. The first step you will need to take is to learn how to cut stained glass. This can be done at home via youtube and internet articles but is probably best done through a local stained glass class where you can get hands on training. Layout, caning and soldering techniques are also things that are best done in a class with supervision.
Once you have learned the art of creating stained glass you will no doubt want to start creating your own unique pieces. This process always starts with finding and modifying a pattern. This website focuses on both finding a pattern and on modifying it to your specifications. Every stained glass or mosaic project is going to be different and there is only a small chance of finding a pattern that is both what you want and the exact size and shape you need. Being able to modify patterns is a tremendous advantage and is also fairly easy. Modifications often involve simply resizing an image. However, some will need to be stretched, have lines added or subtracted, have borders added and so on. Once you have learned the basics of pattern modification you can even take a pattern not meant for stained glass work and modify it for your project. Often by simply adding a few lines and a border.
We will begin with the first step which is to find a suitable pattern. If you already have a pattern then the second link below will take you directly to our modifying patterns page.
