Instructions for Applying Non Skid Tapes or Adhesive Road Marking Tape to Questionable Surfaces.

Non Skid tape or pavement marking tapes perform best on smooth surfaces where water is not able to soak underneath and get to the bottom of the tape. Oftentimes people wish to install the tapes on surfaces that would be considered difficult or questionable surfaces. Rough wood or concrete is an example of this type of surface. A little preparation can greatly increase your success and the longevity of the application in situtations like this.

Adhesive performance depends entirely on surface preparation. The surface that the tape will be applied to must be clean, dry and free of any contaminants such as dirt, grease, oil, etc.. Adhesive products should only be installed when it is dry outside. Applications should not be attempted when it is rainy or when dew is forming on the ground or other surfaces. A dry sunny day is optimal. Air temperature should be between 32 and 100 degrees. Also, it helps to apply a small piece first as practice.

QUESTIONABLE SURFACES

Using DAP Weldwood Contact Cement as a primer will greatly enhance your application. Priming the surface with contact cement prior to applying the tape will accomplish three things. First, it will seal the surface and prevent moisture from coming up underneath the tape. Second, it will smooth out rougher surfaces and provide a flatter surface for the tape. Lastly, it will double the adhesion since contact cement is an adhesive itself.

To prime the surface simply roll on a coat of contact cement and let it dry completely. Then apply the tape. The rougher the surface the more contact cement I use.

There is a picture of what we use below. I have had good luck with this method. It extends the life of the application in almost all situations.
