The bowsprit on my Flicka 20 was showing signs of age and was getting wobbly. The original was made of wood and very strong. However, it was subject to rot over time. I wanted to avoid ever having to replace it again and also wanted it to be stronger.
I removed the original bowsprit and took it to a machine shop in Milton Florida called "Quality Assurance Machine Shop". For a few hundred dollars they recreated the bowsprit out of aluminum. I had the top widened by one inch. Other than that it is the same dimensions as the original. The center is made from a very thick walled aluminum tube. The front round piece is solid. They sleeved the three holes that are used to bolt the flicka bowsprit to the boat so as to prevent water from getting inside. Everything went back on the boat perfectly and the end result is a very stiff bowsprit that will never rot or rust. To dress it up, I plan to install teak planks on top.
The Flicka was originally designed by Bruce Bingham and was first built by Norstar Marine beginning in 1975. In 1977 the mold for the boat was sold to Pacific Seacraft who went on to build around 434 of the little boats. At least 434 was the last hull number ever built. Pacific Seacraft no longer makes the Flicka but they remain a sought after boat. It is unknown whether any more will ever be built. There is not another sailboat like the Flicka and unless someone begins building them again there never will be. To give you an idea of how nice the boats are the last Flicka to sell sold for around $100,000 new which is pretty amazing. The closest boat to a Flicka would be a Falmouth Cutter.
