Enhancing and sealing your fireplace will accomplish two purposes. First, it seals the stone so that it is more resistant to dirt and staining. Second, it enhances the color of the stone and brings out the natural coloration. When selecting your sealer you have a choice of going with a high gloss or low gloss sealer/enhancer. We went with a non gloss product. (note in the picture above that the enhancer goes on glossy but dries non glossy)

Applying enhancer/sealer is not difficult nor is it time consuming. To apply you simply wipe it on. Do not leave puddles of it on the surface. Just rub it in and let it dry. You can add more later if you wish. You can also switch to a glossier product later if you wish. If you do not wish to enhance the stone simply purchase a sealer only. Your natural stone supplier should have all of these products available and can explain the differences.
